I have started playing Sitar after a gap of almost two months. For various reasons, I was away from Sitar. Today I created two taans in Raag Yaman. I played a basic composition that is a classic piece in Raag Yaman. It goes something like this

G- G R G MM P D P MM R G- R

I realized that I was playing a wrong M in mandra saptak and hence corrected accordingly. Then I played all the four taans that was listed under the composition. Finally I managed to create two taans, one that starts on sum and the other that starts on the 9th matra.

I started to play a bit of Jhaala and realized that I need to practice a bit more. The jhaala part will take a bit more time as I need to get my strength back.

As things stand i can play for about 10 minutes. The following are some of the next steps that I intend to take

  1. Create more taans that start from 9th matra, 12th matra, 1st matra.
  2. Play Jhaala as it is from the composition.
  3. Try improvising the composition as well as the taans.

Hopefully if I spend an hour daily from now on, I should be able to play Raag Yaman for atleast 15 minutes.
